New EDA Chief Executive Embarks on Tour to Deepen Ties with Member States

by Keerthana

In a decisive move to reinforce the European Defence Agency’s (EDA) strategic partnerships, Chief Executive André Denk has initiated a series of visits to EU Member States. Appointed less than two months ago, Denk’s agenda focuses on understanding national defence priorities and solidifying the EDA’s role as a central catalyst for collaborative capability development.

The inaugural leg of this diplomatic mission included high-level talks in Sweden and Italy, underscoring a shared commitment to a more robust and integrated European defence framework.

Strengthening Northern European Partnerships

In Stockholm, Chief Executive Denk met with Sweden’s Minister of Defence, Pål Jonson, and the Chief of Defence, General Michael Claesson. The discussions centred on aligning Sweden’s national defence priorities with the EDA’s collaborative programmes. Denk’s itinerary also featured visits to key institutions like the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). The dialogue emphasized concrete EDA support in critical areas such as fostering innovation, advancing capability development, and facilitating joint procurement initiatives to enhance military interoperability.

Advancing Cooperation in the Mediterranean

The tour continued in Rome, where Denk engaged with Italian Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto, National Armaments Director Admiral Giacinto Ottaviani, and Chief of Defence General Luciano Portolano. The conversations delved into strategic avenues for reinforcing defence cooperation, with a particular focus on synchronizing industrial and technological priorities. A key theme was the joint pursuit of European strategic autonomy, highlighting the need for a resilient and technologically advanced defence industrial base across the Union.

A notable highlight of the Rome visit was Denk’s presentation at the Italian Army’s CEPOLISPE centre, where he unveiled the results of the EDA’s groundbreaking Operational Experimentation (OPEX) campaign. This pioneering initiative demonstrated the practical application of unmanned aerial and ground systems (UAVs and UGVs) in revolutionizing cross-domain logistics.

This initial tour marks the beginning of a sustained outreach effort, with the EDA Chief Executive scheduled to visit additional Member States in the coming weeks to further solidify these vital partnerships.
